Welcome to Sarpsborg
Sarpsborg is situated in the heart of Østfold. The city has long history being the third oldest city in Norway and the country’s first capital. In 1016, Olav den Hellige(Olav the Saint) or King Olav Haraldsson, came sailing with his ship on the river Glomma. When he came to the Sarpsfossen , he there founded the city Borg, from around 1200 called Sarpsborg. Borg was the capital of Norway from the year 106 until 1030.
In the last years, we have come even closer to the big world. Moss Airport, Rygge is located 15min drive from Sarpsborg city centre, and along the way you can experience
Inspiria Science Center and Superland. The biggest building-project in Østfold is also now becoming visible: Østfold Hospital. Cultural experiences are also plentiful - from the comprehensive Borgarsyssel Museum, which is located adjacent to the waterfall with the highest output in Scandinavia, to big festivals and almost daily concerts around the city.
