(Ekeby Gård)
Ekeby Farm is a farm with many goats. The farm is situated by the two natural reserves, Telemarkslunden and Gunnarsbybekken.
Animal husbandry at Ekeby
At Ekeby, taking care of our boer goats is our main priority. Goats are not made to be indoors. They need to have lots of space to move around in all year round. That is why we at Ekeby feed the goats outside. The boer goats don't like rain and wind, that's why they have small isolated cabins. Here they can seek shelter when the weather is not good. When it's cold, the goats keep warm in the cabins by their own body heat.
Facts about Boer goats
Boer goats are quite different from Norwegian goats. They are psychically bigger. An adult goat can weigh up to 80 kg while boer goats can weigh up to 130 kg. Their fur is very thin compared to their Norwegian counterpart. They also have long, hanging ears much like African goats do. Boer goats are colourful, with a white body and a red and brown head. Boer goats are usually exhibited, especially in USA. The most prominent feature of the goat is the ability to produce good, quality meat.
Choosing our corn
At Ekeby we have been producing corn since 1986. We pick our corn ourselves because we feel this is the only way the consumer can get the top quality product. The reason behind this is that the sugar in the corn cob is what gives the corn its great taste. A day after picking, this sugar goes over to starch. It is therefore important to freeze the corn cobs as quickly as possible after choosing them.
