Walking – cycling – canoeing
The forest, nature and culture are our foremost attractions. Indre Østfold, with its unspoiled nature and beautiful surroundings is superb for anyone who enjoys an active outdoors life. Paddle a canoe, go skiing in a vast choice of ski tracks, take a bike ride on one of many rural roads, go trout fishing in forest lakes, or try for pike in the river or perch on the ice. Bring the whole family and look for berries or mushrooms in the forest.
There are also a number of touring cabins for you to visit. The cabins are open to the public, mainly in the winter season, and offers light meals and snacks. The possibilites are endless.
The extensive area between Marker, Eidsberg, Rakkestad and Aremark is known as Fjella. This is the largest continuous area of natural beauty in Østfold, and a network of footpaths and ski trails provide inviting summer and winter hiking opportunities.
The “Fjella” touring map can be purchased in sports shops, bookshops and some petrol stations. Touring maps are also available for other areas in Indre Østfold; ask at the sports shops or contact the tourist information office in the municipality.
“Turkart Østfold” (”Touring maps Østfold”), a set of four maps covering the whole county can be purchased for NOK 100 from the local authorities, the libraries and from the Destination company, Reiseliv Indre Østfold (see also www.turkart.no).
The Smaalenene branch of the Norwegian Touring Association (DNT) publishes its own brochure of suggested walks, further information at www.turistforeningen.no/smaalenene Several cultural heritage
offices sell maps of walks and cultural monuments for their municipality.
